About The Position

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) is seeking a Chemistry Laboratory Student Intern to assist with data entry and routine laboratory maintenance tasks within the Data Collection Bureau and Chemistry Laboratory. This internship offers an opportunity to play an important role in enhancing results to ensure a brighter future for Florida's environment. The position is not eligible for remote work and all work will be conducted at the District Brooksville, FL office. The District is a government agency focused on protecting water resources, minimizing flood risks, and ensuring public water needs are met for nearly 6 million people in west-central Florida.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Be at least part-time and currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or other recognized educational or vocational program
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students or a minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with basic laboratory safety
  • Experience with laboratory ethics and data integrity
  • Preferred Degrees: Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering or related major
  • Preferred Degree Level: Undergraduate or Graduate

Responsibilities

  • Accurate data entry into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Management of physical inventory of samples through life cycle: from field sample receipt within the LIMS to proper sample disposal
  • Cleaning of work stations and laboratory benches and routine laboratory maintenance and household tasks: glassware washing & work station preparation for analysis
  • Daily monitoring and recording of all laboratory equipment temperatures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and flexibility to anticipate and meet Laboratory team needs
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions and confidence to ask questions when clarification is needed
