About The Position

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is seeking a Chemistry Lab Manager for its Durham campus. This role is crucial for supporting the academic programs by managing chemistry laboratories, assisting with biology labs, supervising students, and supporting student research and special events. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties.
  • Technical knowledge in a specific technical area(s) and ability to stay current with developments and trends in areas of expertise.
  • Technical knowledge of standardized or specialized procedures and the ability to safely operate instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions through a standard work process.
  • Ability to perform routine or repetitious tasks.
  • Ability to check work for accuracy before completion of tasks.
  • Ability to support scientific research by assisting in experiments, procedures, and/or tests.
  • Ability to perform work that requires mental concentration, visual attention and extensive manipulative skills to comply with research protocol.
  • Ability to observe, monitor, collect, and record data in order to assess accuracy, validity and integrity of data.
  • Ability to provide care for study subjects (i.e. patient, animal, crop) within research protocol, including maintaining optimal conditions to prevent disease and contamination.
  • Ability to work with study subjects in an ethical manner.
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions to support occasional driving responsibilities for the department.

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate degree or higher in chemistry or physical science.
  • Knowledge of chemistry solution-making and laboratory experience (academia or industry).
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite for use with spreadsheets, word processing and file management.
  • Interest in working with and supervising high school students.

Responsibilities

  • Consulting with Chemistry faculty and the Chemistry Chair regarding lab needs for setting up, taking down, and putting away lab equipment on a daily basis.
  • Organization and storage of all instructional laboratory equipment.
  • Maintenance of an up-to-date inventory of equipment and yearly chemical inventory.
  • Maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
  • Providing a central resource for information regarding location of materials and operating manuals for equipment.
  • Training high school students in basic lab safety practices.
  • Supervising high school students to assist with the daily work load.
  • Management of Chemistry Laboratories (60%)

  • Other duties as assigned (5%)
