Job Summary Battelle seeks a Chemist to work full time in the Clinical Chemistry Branch (CCB) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS). As part of the DLS mission, the CCB develops and improves methods for assessing disease status associated with and the risk for selected chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hormonal disorders. The Branch serves as a reference laboratory for these measurements by providing standards that are used as accuracy points by other laboratories around the world. Selected staff is needed to fill program requirements to assist with methods to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. The selected applicant will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance and will work on-site at the CDC Chamblee Campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

Requirements

  • BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry or related scientific field with 2-5 years relevant experience or equivalent
  • Documented experience conducting routine analytical laboratory operations using established methods (including performing analytical services to evaluate new reagents, controls, reference materials, etc.) as well as conducting method development verification and optimization.
  • Experience performing LC/MS and resulting analysis.
  • Programming and coding for Hamilton Automation Instrument
  • Extensive EXCEL knowledge to include developing macros and data templates.
  • Experience or proficiency in visual basic programming language and integration software including Analyst, MultiQuant, and Idigo.
  • Good problem-solving skills and excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Good teamwork with internal and external collaborators.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and validating metrological reference and biomonitoring methods for hormones and assist in the operation of the lipid standardization programs.
  • Application and optimization of existing reference and biomonitoring methods for hormones (i.e., aldosterone, progesterone, testosterone, estrone, estradiol).
  • Sample aliquoting and preparation using automation equipment.
  • Timely analysis of biomonitoring sample analysis by mass spectrometry and automated chemistry platforms.
  • Data processing, integration, analysis, and presentation of results.
  • Operation and maintenance of analytical equipment to include instrument operation, problem solving and maintenance activities.
  • Coordination of participant contact information and quarterly shipments
  • Communications with participants regarding data processing and analysis
  • Draft of technical communications documents including protocols, reports, project updates, presentations and CLIA or ISO documents.
  • Conduct with minimal guidance or assistance by CDC project leads.
  • Adhering to the universal precautions with regard to the handling of biological samples and biological waste.
  • Adhering to CDC/NCEH/DLS and CLIA 88 guidelines with regard to laboratory protocols and quality control.
  • Adhering to the CDC/NCEH/DLS policy of treating all data as confidential.
  • Adhering to the CDC/NCEH/DLS and Battelle policy of laboratory safety and security.
