About The Position

The Chemist III position, 37020834, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Chemistry Program, LC Group, in Tallahassee. The duties of incumbent involve analyzing environmental samples for pesticides, chemical tracers, cyanotoxins, PFAS, VOCs, and other related compounds or contaminants of interest to agency programs. This position is critical to satisfying ongoing demands for analyses necessary to support water quality impairment decisions and providing support for other customers, both within and outside the Department of Environmental Protection.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Chemistry principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of chemical research, analysis, or testing.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
  • Skill in the use of scientific laboratory equipment.
  • At least 6 years of verifiable related experience in chemistry, environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences.
  • Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in chemistry, environmental science, natural sciences, biological sciences, or physical sciences may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing environmental samples for pesticides, chemical tracers, cyanotoxins, PFAS, VOCs, and other related compounds or contaminants of interest to agency programs.
  • Satisfying ongoing demands for analyses necessary to support water quality impairment decisions.
  • Providing support for other customers, both within and outside the Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to chemistry.
  • Conduct chemical research, tests and analyses using scientific methods and techniques.
  • Perform quantitative analysis of scientific data.
  • Determine work priorities, coordinate work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
