The Materials and Process Engineering (M&PE) team in Tucson, AZ plays a critical role in advancing product and process excellence through cutting-edge material development, in-process verification, and analytical services. Comprised of a group of engineers and scientists with expertise in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Metallurgy, and more, M&PE provides comprehensive support to RTX programs, suppliers, and end users. In this role, the selected candidate will primarily work on analyzing data, creating technical recommendations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to evaluate a wide range of materials including adhesives, elastomers, polymers, tapes, composites, and metals. This role will focus on evaluating how long materials or products maintain their required performance characteristics under various environmental stresses. The Chemicals and Materials Engineer II job is in Tucson, AZ and the position is onsite.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a University Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience or An Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Ability to obtain INTERIM U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date
  • Experience in material testing and characterization techniques (e.g. spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, FTIR, DSC, SEM).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry
  • Proficiency in documenting findings and presenting technical results
  • Familiarity with material aging mechanisms, degradation processes, and environmental factors that impact performance.
  • Experience working in the aerospace, defense, or related high-tech industry.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and guidelines related to material storage, handling, and shelf life (e.g., MIL-STD, ASTM).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to document findings and present insights to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data analysis and review material documentation to evaluate compliance with drawings, specifications and program requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to interpret material performance under various environmental conditions and provide insights to stakeholders
  • Leverage expertise in material characteristics to analyze aging and degradation behaviors to accurately predict and optimize material lifecycle and performance
  • Draft detailed technical reports and recommendations based on analysis
  • Support virtual or in-office technical discussions with suppliers and end users to address material-related inquiries.
