Chemical Process Engineer

Kunin Technologies•Chattanooga, TN
•Onsite

About The Position

Kunin Technologies is developing advanced separation technologies to capture value from overlooked resources and improve the supply of critical minerals. The Chemical Process Engineer will lead the wet-chemistry side of an automated roll-to-roll ion-exchange media processing line, including reagent saturation, reaction residence, washing, and drying. The role also includes bench- and demonstration-scale process development. The demonstration line is planned as the basis for a larger greenfield manufacturing facility. The engineer will join a ten-person team in Chattanooga, Tennessee, working toward delivery of the demonstration line by the end of 2027. Direct web-processing experience is advantageous but not required. A laboratory technician and analytical chemist are expected to be hired for this workload three months after the engineer’s hire. Intermittent travel to partner facilities may be required, and extended hours and weekends are frequently required to support critical project milestones. U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or science field; chemical engineering is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience with plant or pilot equipment, including pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, chemical transfers, and instrumentation.
  • Experience handling aggressive chemistry, such as acids or reactive monomers, or working in an inert atmosphere.
  • At least 1 year of experience using software tools such as Matlab or Python.
  • Software fluency to automate testing or analysis tasks.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding atmosphere.
  • Creative problem-solving ability across reactive chemistry, radiochemistry, material handling, and fluid mechanics.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Able to travel intermittently to partners’ facilities.
  • Able to work extended hours and weekends frequently to support critical project milestones.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct web-processing experience.
  • Chemical engineering degree.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate bench- and demonstration-scale wet-processing equipment, including reagent saturation baths, squeeze-roll pickup control, wash and rinse trains, and drying equipment.
  • Characterize processes by measuring pickup and add-on, assessing uniformity, performing mass balances, and collecting kinetics data in collaboration with the radiochemist.
  • Prepare scale-up documentation, including PFDs, P&IDs, SOPs, and mass and energy balances for the demonstration line.
  • Source and commission wet-end and dip-coating hardware.
  • Perform general plant process engineering involving utilities, chemical transfers, waste streams, and safety procedures for aggressive chemistry.
