About The Position

GFL Ottawa is looking for chemical technicians to support our Stevenage liquid waste processing facility! This role involves preparing shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transport, receiving client waste, and taking samples for lab analysis. The Chemical Operator will ensure waste is processed safely and efficiently, adhering to acceptance protocols and completing necessary paperwork. The position also requires performing job hazard risk assessments, providing excellent customer service, and reporting any incidents to the Shift Supervisor or General Manager. Additionally, the role includes attending Household Hazardous Waste collection events and preparing manifest documents.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Comfortable working weekend shifts. (mainly Saturday, with 2 - 3 Sunday events each season)
  • Degree or Diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Environmental Technology, or equivalent.
  • Must be motivated, able to multi-task, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be safety conscious and detail oriented.
  • Must be comfortable working in a mostly outdoor environment (4 seasons).
  • Must be willing and able to report to work clean shaven (respirator safety).
  • Ability to follow procedures and execute work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to repetitively lift 40 lbs. above waist.
  • Valid work authorization in the country where the job is located is required.
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide valid documentation confirming their eligibility to work in the country where the job is located prior to their start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with waste management regulations, Ontario regulation 347, Transportation of Dangerous Goods is an asset.
  • Previous hazardous and non-hazardous waste management experience is an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude, including knowledge and use of hand tools is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare shipments of hazardous and non-hazardous waste for transport.
  • Receive all client waste – both bulk liquids/solids and containerized.
  • Take samples from waste vehicles and containers for lab analysis.
  • Ensure waste is processed in a timely and safe manner.
  • Ensure incoming waste conforms with acceptance protocol.
  • Ensure safe operation and procedures are always followed.
  • Complete paperwork properly & ensure it is submitted.
  • Complete job hazard risk assessments.
  • Ensure superior customer service is provided.
  • Notify the Shift Supervisor/General Manager of any defects, damages, mistakes, errors, contamination, spills, other incidents, or accidents that are identified.
  • Attend Household Hazardous Waste collection events to identify, classify and separate waste.
  • Prepare necessary waste manifest documents for transport back to Stevenage facility.
  • Other tasks as required.
