This role involves the operation, regulation, quality control, maintenance, and adjustment of water treatment equipment, including cooling lake fill pumps and ash pond overflow basins pumps. The position also includes overseeing and directing other employees, training assigned personnel, and performing other duties related to the production of potable water, filtered water, and high purity boiler water.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the two (2) year Trainee program.
  • Passing the promotional examination in connection with the Trainee program.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, regulate, control quality, maintain, and adjust water treatment equipment.
  • Inspect and check the proper operation of assigned equipment, including cooling lake fill pumps and ash pond overflow basins pumps.
  • Make necessary adjustments and repairs to equipment.
  • Oversee and direct the activities of other employees.
  • Train and instruct assigned employees.
  • Perform duties related to the production of potable water, filtered water, and high purity boiler water.
  • Consult with the operator being relieved at shift change, noting special orders and current operating conditions.
  • Inspect control panels, review logs, and inspect affected equipment.
  • Maintain proper chemical feeds, flows, pressures, temperatures, and chemical parameters.
  • Operate pumps, fans, mixers, and chemical feed systems.
  • Operate and monitor Data Acquisition System/Distributive Control Systems.
  • Operate, test, and maintain records of subsurface injection wells and annular systems in accordance with US EPA underground injection Class 1 permit and abide by the Underground Sources of Drinking Water Act.
  • Operate, test, and maintain, chemical clean and trouble shoot reverse osmosis system to produce high purity water.
  • Operate and maintain pumps, controls, and valves of the flue gas conditioning system.
  • Maintain equipment and work area in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Continuously observe company safety rules and practices.
  • Check the condition of safety equipment and attend scheduled safety meetings.
  • Participate in CPR training as required.
  • Perform operating maintenance when operating equipment, and at other times perform maintenance on valves, sample lines, lubrication systems, pressure vessels, strainers, distributors, tanks, and general station equipment and structures.
  • Inspect, clean, make minor repairs, and assist in the maintenance of water treatment pressure vessels, chemical storage tanks, chemical day tanks, condensate and filtered water storage tanks.
  • Charge and run applicable chemical tests.
  • Maintain chemical feed systems essential to the production of potable water, filtered water, and high purity boiler water.
  • Maintain “Monthly Report of Operation of Water Treatment Plant” report for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
  • Monitor usage and quality of acid and caustic shipments; order and unload those shipments.
  • Operate, trouble shoot, and assist in the maintenance of all instruments and controls used in the production of potable water, filtered water, and high purity boiler water.
  • Observe instrument indications and perform activities, including assembling and recording water flow, differential pressure, chemical consumption, contaminant concentrations, and totaled flow data and readings.
  • Correct, date, and sign charts and observe correct operation of logging and recording instruments.
  • Assist in keeping or maintaining chronological logs containing pertinent operating information and prepare specified related reports and records.
  • Determine which polishers and when to regenerate, coordinating with unit operations and system requirements.
  • Perform the handling of emergency or abnormal operations necessary for maintaining in service or returning to service the water treatment system or related auxiliary or accessory equipment.
  • Perform regenerations on demineralizers, polishers, softeners, and other systems.
  • Perform analysis, operate, and maintain analyzers essential to the operation, regeneration and trouble shooting of demineralizer trains, polishers, and other equipment.
  • Perform resin bed maintenance including resin addition, resin removal, resin sample collection, resin bed change out, and chemical or mechanical cleaning of resin beds.
  • Operate, monitor, and inspect remote deep wells, recharge wells, and monitoring wells, including making necessary adjustments.
  • Determine proper clearance steps used in clearing and holding of equipment to maintain safe working conditions.
  • Utilize arc flash protection equipment for medium voltage protection.
  • Perform the mechanical and electrical switching operations to remove assigned equipment from service or return it to service.
  • Prepare, place or remove hold cards in accordance with established procedures, taking proper precautions and using safety equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including directing and training assigned employees.
