About The Position

For 50 years, San Antonio Shoemakers, a San Antonio, Texas based company, has developed a reputation as a premier American manufacturer of high quality footwear. SAS has an opening for a Chemical Engineer who specializes in EVA rubber, SBR, TPU, PEBA and/or polyurethane (PU) formulations.

Requirements

Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field or equivalent experience.
3-5 years of experience in rubber/polymer compounding, specifically with EVA, SBR, PEBA and PU, ideally within footwear, automotive, or industrial manufacturing
Familiarity with material testing methods (tensile strength, hardness, etc.)
Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, domestically and internationally
Experience working with product development teams
Strong analytical skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in retail management systems and Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

Optimize PU resin/foam formulations to meet target specifications as well as help design and optimize EVA foam compounds.
Lead trials of new formulations throughout the design and development process all the way to efficient manufacturing.
Evaluate new raw materials, additives, fillers, etc., to improve product performance and reduce costs.
Evaluate and modify processing methods including compounding, extrusion, injection molding, and curing/foaming processes.
Troubleshoot issues related to material performance and equipment issues in manufacturing.
Formulate bonding agents, adhesives, and coatings to ensure structural integrity.
Conduct physical and chemical property testing on materials.
Ensure all processes comply with international safety and environmental regulations.
Support continuous improvement of plant operations and productions workflows.
Manage and oversee trial runs throughout manufacturing process.
