Chemical Engineer, Sr.

Centrus Energy•Oak Ridge, TN
•$98,227 - $163,711

About The Position

Join a team pushing the boundaries of advanced nuclear technology. As a Chemical Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager, you’ll play a central role in supporting the process systems, materials, components, and specialized production equipment that drive the Centrifuge Project. Your expertise will help advance critical program objectives while upholding Centrus Energy’s high standards in safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. In this role, you’ll work across a broad and exciting range of responsibilities. You’ll support the design, development, and troubleshooting of complex chemical and process systems—including vacuum and pressure systems, gas‑handling and purification processes, and material compatibility assessments for composites, metals, and specialty substances. You’ll contribute to hazard analysis, process safety evaluations, and chemical‑risk mitigation efforts to ensure operations remain safe and reliable. A key part of your work will be developing, maintaining, and reviewing detailed P&IDs, ensuring configuration control, tracking design changes, and validating diagrams with cross‑functional teams across design, manufacturing, operations, testing, quality, and safety. You’ll also help ensure these systems meet all relevant codes and standards and are fully integrated into fabrication and assembly documentation. Additionally, you’ll support materials and equipment engineering by developing specifications for chemical‑process materials, coatings, lubricants, and consumables; assisting in the design and evaluation of components made from composites, metals, and specialty materials; and contributing to equipment designs used for chemical processes, material handling, and controlled‑environment operations. Your role will also include preparing, reviewing, and approving engineering packages, fabrication documentation, process instructions, and chemical‑control procedures, as well as establishing best‑practice methods for handling sensitive components and supporting QL‑1 and QL‑2 quality requirements. You’ll drive continuous improvement by collaborating across engineering, operations, design, procurement, quality, and safety teams; improving both internal processes and those of external suppliers; and managing multiple priorities to meet schedule and budget targets. Finally, you’ll help maintain strict compliance with company policies, safety programs, security requirements, environmental regulations, and DOE chemical‑handling expectations.
