About The Position

Fort Greene Council, Inc. (FGC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in Brooklyn, New York in 1973. FGC provides services across the lifespan, including early childhood education and comprehensive programming for older adults. FGC operates sixteen (16) Older Adult Centers across seven Brooklyn community districts, as well as one early childhood education center, Young Minds UPK-4. Hourly Rate: $27.95 Position Summary The Head Chef is responsible for overseeing all kitchen operations at an Older Adult Center, ensuring compliance with NYC Aging meal service standards, food safety regulations, and program requirements. This role ensures meals are prepared, documented, and served safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience cooking in a commercial kitchen
  • Food Handler’s Certificate required
  • Ability to comply with NYC Aging, DOHMH, and food safety regulations
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform physical kitchen duties
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Food Handlers Certificate
  • High School graduate or HS Equivalency, and 1 years cooking in commercial kitchen.
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with good English language written and oral skills.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and current chest x-ray and annual physical exam available.
  • Background check required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in institutional, community, or senior services food programs preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and coordinate kitchen staff, volunteers, and trainees to ensure compliance with food service and sanitation standards
  • Prepare, cook, and oversee meal service, ensuring proper temperature control, portioning, and timely service in accordance with NYC Aging requirements
  • Complete and maintain required documentation, including Daily Food Use Records and Monthly Inventory Reports
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is properly cleaned, maintained, and operated safely
  • Maintain accurate inventory of food and supplies; ensure proper storage of dry, refrigerated, and frozen items
  • Conduct and document daily refrigerator and freezer temperature checks
  • Support compliance with health inspections, food safety standards, and audit requirements
  • Collaborate with the Program Assistant, Kitchen Technician, and Custodian to maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment
  • Promote teamwork and maintain a respectful, inclusive workplace culture
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding when working with older adult populations
  • Adhere to NYC Aging meal service schedules and guidelines
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation for audits and inspections
  • Ensure food safety, sanitation, and temperature logs are consistently completed
  • Participate in required trainings and maintain certifications
