About The Position

The Chef position is responsible for providing culinary services to the staff and third party personnel. Work is normally carried out at the LSS or LRR kitchen, but the Chef may be called upon to travel and work in remote Arctic locations with exposure to severe outdoor winter weather conditions. This position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local 2228.

Requirements

  • Interprovincial Journeyman status, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Safe Food Handling certification and WHMIS Certificate
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Journeyman-level experience working in a restaurant, hotel, or cafeteria
  • Proven experience ordering and managing inventory
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
  • Effective planning, organizing and time management skills, and effective decision-making skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work rotational schedule and travel as part of a small team to adjacent sites to perform Chef functions
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as required
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use MS Word and Excel would be an asset
  • Culinary Diploma and/or Red Seal Designation preferred
  • Previous experience working in a remote camp setting is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and serve three (3) daily meals (buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner) in accordance with approved cycle menu, in sufficient quantities and quality
  • Develop menus that reflect site preferences and prepare dishes for those with food allergies or other dietary restrictions/preferences
  • Prepare baked goods and desserts from scratch
  • Provide service to various sites, requiring travel
  • Ensure safe and sanitary work environment; kitchen and dining room sanitization duties executing safe food storage and labelling of potential food allergy items
  • Menu /meal planning based on master schedule
