This role involves assisting in the interviewing and selection of staff for the patient care unit, and working with the Manager to provide leadership and direction in alignment with organizational and departmental goals. The Charge RN will communicate with the Manager regarding shift issues, challenges, and positive situations, and will assist in the professional growth and development of staff, including participating in performance evaluations and employee counseling. This position supervises professional and technical unit staff and student nurses, determines appropriate staffing levels based on budgeted hours and patient acuity, and assigns duties accordingly. The Charge RN oversees the maintenance of necessary supplies for patient care, collaborates with ancillary services for a safe environment, and assists in maintaining budgetary limits. They promote open communication and continuity of care between shifts, floors, physicians, and departments. The role also involves adhering to and assisting with orientation for emergency procedures, disaster plans, and patient care policies. The Charge RN evaluates patient care, administers nursing care as needed to maintain skills and support staff, and acts as a patient advocate. They maintain patient confidentiality and participate in teaching patients and their significant others. Cooperation with clinical instructors for student experiences is expected. The Charge RN is responsible for their own continuing education and participates in committees. Additional related duties may be assigned.
