About The Position

The OR Charge Nurse will serve as the clinical leader and resource for Operating Room staff during assigned shifts. This role coordinates patient flow throughout the surgical continuum, provides guidance and support to perioperative team members, and assists with clinical decision-making and problem resolution. The Charge Nurse ensures adherence to hospital policies, AORN guidelines, and regulatory requirements, while also facilitating communication among surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, and ancillary departments. Responsibilities include coordinating the daily surgical schedule and room assignments, assigning personnel based on patient acuity, procedure complexity, competency, and staffing needs, and monitoring surgical progress to adjust staffing and room utilization. The Charge Nurse also coordinates emergency and add-on procedures, ensures the availability of necessary equipment, supplies, implants, and instrumentation, and assists in managing schedule changes, delays, and turnover efficiency. A key aspect of this role is maintaining awareness of block utilization and case flow, promoting a culture of patient safety and accountability, and ensuring compliance with the Universal Protocol and surgical time-outs. The Charge Nurse monitors adherence to infection prevention practices and sterile technique, assists in the investigation and resolution of safety events, and supports quality improvement initiatives and performance metrics. They also participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and corrective action planning as needed. Furthermore, the Charge Nurse coordinates staffing assignments and break coverage, assists with the management of on-call personnel, evaluates staffing needs, and communicates shortages to leadership. They monitor productivity and staffing efficiency and assist with the orientation and competency validation of new employees.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current Texas Registered Nurse License.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • ACLS Certification required.
  • PALS Certification required.
  • Minimum 3–5 years Operating Room experience.
  • Minimum 2 years circulating experience.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Leadership or charge nurse experience preferred.
  • CNOR Certification preferred.
  • AORN Membership encouraged.
