About The Position

The Charge Artist is responsible for working with the Technical Director and Director of Production to plan the finishing of scenery as produced by the scene shop. The Charge Artist will direct the Scenic Artists and mentor the Scene Painting Apprentice in paint and finishing techniques. Charge Artist should recommend best techniques for timely finishing of scenery and execute such. All Scenic staff will assist as needed with load-in and completion of scenery and with strike and restore of the venue and will help to maintain a clean and safe workshop.

Requirements

  • Prior scene shop experience.
  • Strong knowledge of scenic paint and finishing techniques.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Sensitivity and commitment to the mission of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts
  • We’re pleased to consider applicants who will be physically located in and who will have a local address in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia for the duration of their employment. The Foundation does not offer fully remote work for any positions. Applicants who reside in any other state would be required to be physically located in and provide a local address in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia prior to starting work for Wolf Trap Foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for advising the TD on scenic treatments for two (2) opera productions at The Barns.
  • Lead the paint crew and mentor the scene painting apprentice.
  • Supervise the safe and clean management of the paint shop and stage.
  • Finish scenery during load-in and assist with strike.
  • Help to restore the Barns at the end of the season.
