About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director, the Chaplain provides comprehensive spiritual services to patients, caregivers and staff with caring presence, empathy, and sensitivity to the beliefs, cultural and ethnic heritage, and spiritual history of the person served. Such services include spiritual assessments, coordination with the patient’s spiritual community, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams as well as planning, conducting and documenting outcomes of spiritual care in the patient’s record using established charting methodologies.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology or the equivalent from an accredited seminary, college or university.
  • Minimum of four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education completed from an accredited chaplaincy training program.

  • Professional Certification
  • Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Clinical Pastoral Education International (CPEI) or other recognized faith-specific chaplaincy certifying organization.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Spiritual Care to patients, caregivers, family members and staff, as needed.
  • The Chaplain interacts with clinical staff and other members of interdisciplinary teams to assess patient care needs, formulate care plans and evaluate outcomes.
  • Serves on hospital/service area committees and interdisciplinary teams as required by hospital policies and procedures and as requested by leadership.
  • Conducts in-service training for staff with regard to providing spiritual support.
  • Coordinates religious support and pastoral care with the patient’s spiritual community and local clergy.
  • When requested, provides interfaith prayer and services for patients and events throughout the year (Nurse's Week, blessing for hospital events or other celebrations, memorials outside of business hours, etc.).
  • May need to be available on a 24-hour basis as determined appropriate by hospital leadership.
  • Uses professional level communication skills when working with patients, families, providers, Interdisciplinary staff and representatives from other agencies and services.
  • Handles difficult interpersonal situations effectively.
  • Problem solves and addresses conflict professionally.
  • Records all patient/family and caregiver contacts in the electronic medical record in a timely, appropriate, concise, and legal manner.
  • Effectively implements individual spiritual care based on assessments and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Prioritizes needs to accomplish assessment and spiritual interventions appropriate to various age groups, complicated grief, ethical dilemmas and special needs of patients and families with a variety of cultural and ethnic perspectives.
  • Performs all duties in an ethical manner protecting patient and family confidentiality.
  • Serves as spiritual consultant and liaison to team, program, facility and community.
  • Collaborates effectively with all stakeholders.
  • Participates in program planning and implementation and evaluation of effectiveness of efforts to improve Chaplain program services.
  • Collaborates effectively with those responsible for bereavement services.
  • When necessary provides additional spiritual support.
  • Participates in program orientations, educational programs, as requested.
  • Demonstrates continued enhancement of professional skills.
  • Participates in a variety spiritual related activities and trainings that allow for collaboration with other spiritual/religious professionals.
  • Demonstrates System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
