About The Position

The Utah County Sheriff's Office is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Chaplain to provide spiritual care and religious support to individuals housed in the Utah County Jail. This is a part-time non-benefited position that serves inmates of all faiths and religious backgrounds. The Chaplain works closely with inmates, volunteer religious representatives, and Sheriff's Office staff to ensure inmates' religious needs are met in a respectful, timely, and professional manner. The ideal candidate is committed to serving people of all faith traditions and can provide support regardless of their own religious affiliation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Theology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Board-Certified Chaplain, licensed pastoral counselor, or chaplain endorsement is preferred.
  • Experience serving in correctional, hospital, military, law enforcement, or institutional chaplaincy.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to remain calm, compassionate, and professional in crisis situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide spiritual care and religious support to inmates regardless of faith or religious affiliation.
  • Become familiar with a variety of religious beliefs and practices, or obtain the necessary information to appropriately assist inmates with their religious needs.
  • Coordinate and communicate with volunteer religious representatives serving within the jail.
  • Review and approve inmate religious diet requests in a timely manner.
  • Track and maintain records of religious diet approvals throughout an inmate's incarceration and future stays.
  • Generate religious visitation lists from inmate kiosk requests and distribute them to volunteer group supervisors.
  • Use computer systems to maintain records, respond to requests, and perform daily administrative tasks.
  • Respond to crisis situations as needed, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays when required.
  • Work with religious organizations to provide scriptures, religious literature, and approved religious items to inmates.
  • Conduct inmate interviews regarding religious requests and accommodations.
  • Respond to inmate religious requests within 10 business days.
