About The Position

The Chaplain provides professional and competent spiritual care ministry and is responsible for serving the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of others in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. As a member of the healthcare team, the chaplain is directly responsible for the implementation of the mission, values, policies, and procedures of the Department of Spiritual Health Services and the facility in which they serve.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • State-Specific Requirements (Alaska, Oregon, and Washington): Required: Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Psychology, Divinity, or a related field.
  • State-Specific Requirements (Alaska, Oregon, and Washington): Required: Completion of at least one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited or approved by ACPE, USCCB/CCA, or CASC/ACSS.
  • State-Specific Requirements (California): Required: Master’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or equivalent applicable education from an accredited institution.
  • State-Specific Requirements (California): Required: Completion of at least one (1) unit of accredited CPE (4 units preferred).
  • State-Specific Requirements (Texas): Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field and one (1) unit of accredited CPE for Providence at Home roles.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the provision of spiritual/pastoral support to individuals or families required.
  • National Chaplain Certification: Required within three (3) years of hire.
  • Current, valid driver’s license and state-minimum automobile insurance maintained.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and governmental regulations; ability to effectively present information to leaders, team members, and external parties.
  • For those working in a Catholic context, knowledge of the Religious and Ethical Directives of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops is required.
  • For Catholic priests, must be ordained and in good standing with faculties provided by the local bishop.
  • Ability to incorporate spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development into practice; ability to facilitate theological/spiritual reflection.
  • Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity, with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field (for AK, OR, WA).
  • One (1) year of experience related to loss, grief, bereavement, or trauma preferred.
  • Board Certification (Preferred): Professional certification through organizations such as the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Spiritual Care Association (SCA), or National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) is preferred for all Providence at Home locations.
  • State-Specific Requirements (Texas): Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field and one (1) unit of accredited CPE for Providence at Home roles.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective spiritual support and appropriate religious/spiritual resources that contribute to the well-being of care recipients, their families, and caregivers.
  • Provide spiritual care that respects diversity and differences, including but not limited to culture, gender, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices.
  • Triage and manage crises in the practice of spiritual care.
  • Formulate and utilize individualized spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans; accurately and concisely document care in appropriate records.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships, including collaborative relationships with community clergy and faith group leaders.
  • Understand and function within the institutional culture and systems, utilizing business principles appropriate to the role.
  • Promote, facilitate, and support ethical decision-making and integrate research literature into spiritual care practice.
