About The Position

To integrate spiritual and religious aspects of care into the delivery of services to patients families staff and volunteers by highly qualified and certified Spiritual Care and Counseling professionals. The Spiritual Care Team engages the care and treatment of the whole person (spiritual physical psychological mental and social).

Requirements

  • Masters of Divinity or equivalent graduate studies in a theological field
  • Certified Specialist with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) which includes 4 units (1600 hours) of Supervised Pastoral Education plus a minimum of 1000 hours of work experience.
  • Member of College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • CPI - Crisis Prevention Training (or successful completion as part of clinical orientation) is required

Nice To Haves

  • Additional training and experience in regard to therapeutic interventions especially in mental health is preferred including:
  • Counselling skills and experience with dysfunctional family systems
  • Demonstrated ability to develop therapeutic rapport with a wide range of clients
  • Understanding and ability to contribute to collaborative patient care planning implementation and evaluation of individualized plans of care
  • Knowledge of theories and concepts of behavioural science
  • Ability to assess risk and safety factors in a therapeutic environment and implement appropriate plan to address these
  • Willingness and ability to continue to enhance professional competence and knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Conduct spiritual and/or religious needs assessment
  • Will be actively engaged and a participating member of the St. Joseph’s Health System Spiritual Care Community of Practice
  • Provide spiritual and/or religious care and counselling based on assessment to inpatient and outpatient populations and their attending family members friends and significant others
  • Record spiritual care interventions in patient health care record/ Dovetale/Epic
  • Explore the spiritual significance and meaning experienced in times of sickness
  • Examine the implications of the patient’s life family and community as a result of the medical experience
  • Provide bereavement support
  • Coordinate and provide services of celebration commemoration or memorial respecting recipients' spiritual and faith-based beliefs and practices
  • Facilitate and provide spiritual and faith based activities
  • Provide liaison services with community faith and spiritual tradition representatives as appropriate and according to patients'/clients' identified faith groups
  • Educate and support staff and volunteers who will engage in spiritual care visitation in healthcare facilities and faith/spiritual-based organizations in the community
  • Advocate for the spiritual and religious dimensions of care as an integral member of the interdisciplinary health care team
  • Support staff as they provide care to patients and families including crisis intervention debriefing traumatic interventions bereavement support memorial services and other rituals
  • Provides guidance and support as appropriate to the Spiritual Care Residents
  • Participating in the On-Call responsibilities of the Spiritual Care Department will also be an expectation of the person in this role
