About The Position

This is a short-term position with an expected duration of 9 months. The Chaplain Resident will provide professional care to patients, guests, and hospital staff. Responsibilities include responding to referrals, rounding on assigned patient units, providing rituals and sacramental care, sharing in the planning and leadership of chapel services, and participating in special services. The role involves consulting with other healthcare professionals to enhance patient care, charting visits in the electronic medical record, and providing educational in-services. The resident will work to increase the visibility and quality of Spiritual Care within the hospital community and participate in on-call rotations, including nights and weekends, for emergencies. The position functions as a member of the Spiritual Care team and actively contributes to Clinical Pastoral Education Program activities.

Requirements

Baccalaureate degree (B.A. or B.S.) or international equivalent required.
One or more units of Clinical Pastoral Education required.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Knowledgeable about spiritual care with persons of diverse religious, socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, educational, and cultural backgrounds.
Ability to work well as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to access varied experiences and interpretations of spirituality, behavioral sciences, and relationality to provide comprehensive care to others.
Familiarity with and application of clinical ethical decision-making.
Regularly seeks consultation to provide the best standard of care.
Good organizational and computer skills.

Chaplain residents frequently need to move throughout the hospital to attend to patients, guests, and staff, and respond to emergencies and consult requests.
Need to communicate texts and rituals, use the hospital’s secure messaging system, and document their visits electronically using a computer.
While serving required on-call in-hospital overnight shifts, chaplains need to respond to emergent calls and codes at any time of the shift.
In the educational and clinical settings, they need to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.

Nice To Haves

Graduate degree from an accredited seminary or theological school or commensurate tradition-specific training preferred.

Functions as a member of the Spiritual Care team and maintains a close working relationship with all members of the department.
Actively contributes to Clinical Pastoral Education Program activities, including seminars, verbatim presentations, peer group, and individual supervision.
Performs other duties as required, assigned, or negotiated.
