About The Position

The Chaplain Resident position is responsible for providing spiritual, emotional, and relational support to patients, families, and healthcare professionals. This role involves developing the art and science of chaplaincy care and self-awareness through successful participation in accredited programs of ACPE. The position requires a commitment to Memorial Hermann's mission, vision, and values, and aims to create compassionate and personalized experiences for all members of the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Ability to establish goals for learning according to the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; ability to send/receive email communication.
  • Graduate level reading and writing ability.
  • Experience with diversity and/or willingness to work with diverse populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Completed one (1) year ACPE residency or equivalent (for Second Year Resident).
  • Ability to establish goals for specialty learning beyond the first year according to the Standards of ACPE (for Second Year Resident).
  • Completion of ACPE Level 1 outcomes (for Second Year Resident).
  • Demonstrates good communication practices with clinical team, including chaplaincy staff, interdisciplinary staff, and ACPE faculty (for Second Year Resident).
  • Basic competency and motivation as a helping professional to develop spiritual competency and skills in the art and science of chaplaincy care and the behavioral sciences (for All Levels).
  • Be accepted in the accredited program of ACPE at Memorial Hermann- TMC/Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital or Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital (for All Levels).

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent preferred (for First Year Resident).
  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent preferred (for Second Year Resident).

Responsibilities

  • Provides spiritual, emotional, and relational support to patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Successfully participates in the educational programs according to the standards of ACPE.
  • Consults with and participates in patient care with the professional hospital staff.
  • Offers support and guidance in end-of-life decisions, advanced directives, DNR, and clinical ethics.
  • Conducts or participates in spiritual/religious rituals to address the assessed needs of patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Conducts memorial/funeral services and performs wedding ceremonies as assigned.
  • Adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the Memorial Hermann mission, vision, values, and services standards in performing all job duties.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences.
  • Models Memorial Hermann’s service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
