The Chaplain CPE Resident is in training to become a Professional Chaplain, Pastoral Counselor, or Specialized Minister and participates fully in the CPSP Accredited Residency Program curriculum. The Resident provides direct patient care on assigned units, serves as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, and addresses the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and staff. The role includes rotating on-call coverage after hours and on weekends in-house, responding to traumas, codes, deaths, crises, consultations, referrals, screenings, and requests for Medical Ethics Consultations. The Resident contacts each new admission to assess the patient’s emotional, social, and spiritual needs and uses the findings to guide care plans and follow-up visits. Residents collaborate with interdisciplinary teams through rounds, meetings, and professional conversations, and develop appropriate, collegial relationships with staff. The residency develops skills in pastoral conversation, spiritual assessment, working effectively with diversity, grief and loss, crisis response, meaning-making, family systems, and group dynamics. It also emphasizes openness to learning through adult learning theory and the clinical method of action, reflection, and new action. On-call responsibilities cover the hospital and include screens, consultations, referrals, phone calls, codes, traumas, deaths, requests for advance directives, Medical Ethics Consults, and decedent care procedures.
