About The Position

The Chancellor of Public Schools provides executive leadership for the Division of Public Schools and performs duties delegated by the Senior Chancellor and Commissioner of Education consistent with the authority of the State Board of Education and Florida law. The Chancellor provides leadership and direction to the Deputy Chancellor of Educator Quality, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Improvement, Vice Chancellor for Literacy Achievement and other division leaders. The Chancellor must exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, meet critical deadlines and maintain effective performance in a fast-paced environment. The Chancellor is expected to communicate professionally, collaborate effectively and foster a workplace grounded in accountability, respect and shared responsibility. The Chancellor performs duties delegated by the Senior Chancellor, Commissioner of Education, the State Board of Education, and the Florida Legislature.

Responsibilities

Provides executive leadership and strategic direction for the offices of Educator Quality, Strategic Improvement and Literacy Achievement, including leadership and direction for the Deputy and Vice Chancellors and their respective bureaus.
Establishes shared priorities, strengthens coordination across the Department and ensures the work of the Division of Public Schools advances the Department’s vision, mission and strategic goals.
Leads the development and implementation of statewide policies, programs and initiatives that strengthen K-12 education and connect educator quality, student achievement and workforce needs.
Provides direction and support to school districts and other education partners in recruiting, developing and retaining highly effective teachers, school leaders and other education personnel.
Oversees daily operations, including business and administrative functions related to personnel, purchasing, property control and fiscal management.
Establishes clear expectations for fiscal accountability, internal controls, performance monitoring and the timely resolution of identified concerns.
Directs strategic planning and performance management by establishing measurable goals, monitoring work plans and using data to evaluate progress, identify risks and improve outcomes across Educator Quality, Strategic Improvement and Literacy Achievement.
Breaks down organizational silos by establishing shared accountability, facilitating collaboration and resolving barriers across Department offices, school districts, state agencies, and education and workforce partners.
Coordinates the development of education policies for the Senior Chancellor and Commissioner through the preparation of State Board of Education rules and agenda items, legislative proposals, federal compliance activities and budget requests.
Promotes innovative thinking and continuous improvement throughout the Division of Public Schools.
Anticipates emerging education and workforce needs and develops forward-looking solutions that improve services, reduce administrative burdens and strengthen student outcomes.
Encourages the responsible use of data, technology and stakeholder feedback to test new approaches, evaluate effectiveness and scale successful practices statewide.
Directs the communication of education policies, initiatives and issues to school districts, the Legislature, the State Board of Education, the public, education organizations, and other state and federal agencies.
Represents the Senior Chancellor, Commissioner and Department with constituent groups, professional organizations, school districts, government entities and other external partners.
Serves as a liaison and builds productive relationships that support Department priorities and advance outcomes for Florida’s students, educators and schools.
Oversees the preparation, interpretation and implementation of state policies and directives pertaining to the Division of Public Schools.
Monitors implementation, addresses inconsistencies, and makes determinations necessary to ensure policies and directives are carried out effectively.
As a supervisor, establishes clear expectations, communicates effectively, motivates employees and directs the work of all assigned personnel.
Supports employee development through coaching, feedback, training and opportunities for professional growth.
Completes accurate performance appraisals and work plans within required timeframes and approves attendance and leave for each direct report.
Has the authority to make hiring and disciplinary recommendations and is responsible for fostering a professional, collaborative and accountable workplace.
Attendance is an essential function of this position.
Travel is required for this position.
