About The Position

The Champion Section Editor role involves managing a team of writers, overseeing the content production for a specific section of a weekly newspaper. This includes generating story ideas, assigning tasks to writers, providing guidance and feedback, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of the content. The editor is responsible for editing and rewriting stories, making simple design edits using Adobe InDesign, and verifying all information before submitting pages for copy editing. Additionally, section editors are required to write weekly for their section and gain experience in leading a team of reporters. This position also involves training, directing, and encouraging volunteer writers.

Requirements

  • Talented in writing.
  • Ability to learn the technology needed to execute the position.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English.
  • Possess public communication skills for professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Word and Adobe Suite.
  • Ability to reason, analyze information, and apply judgment to solve problems.
  • Ability to evaluate story ideas and judge when and if they should be pursued.
  • Understand that the deadline is a fixed element and figure out how to coordinate content to meet that deadline.
  • Ability to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Ability to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Ability to regularly hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Ability to regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.

  • A journalism student would be preferred for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Produce content on deadline for their section of the 16-page newspaper every week.
  • Gather story ideas by working with sources, including deans, department heads, and others.
  • Assign story ideas to student writers, providing story objectives, content specifics, due dates, and editing suggestions.
  • Be available to writers via email or text for questions.
  • Write stories for their section each week, taking on needed or difficult topics.
  • Edit stories as they are submitted, and when needed, either rewrite the story themselves or return it to the student to rewrite.
  • Complete simple design corrections using Adobe InDesign.
  • Verify all information, including spelling of names, dates, and data.
  • Strictly adhere to Liberty University policies and represent the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
  • Train, direct, encourage, and give feedback to volunteer writers.
