The Certified Wound Continence and Ostomy Nurse uses the nursing process to provide specialized care for patients with wound, ostomy, and continence concerns in the acute care setting. This role involves direct patient care, as well as serving as an educator, consultant, researcher, or administrator. The nurse participates in patient care assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for inpatients, and partners with patients and their families to identify learning needs and provide education. The position also involves providing care for stomas, complex wounds, fistulae, pressure ulcers, and fecal and urinary incontinence, and assisting physicians and nursing staff with management and teaching related to complex skin care needs and ostomies. The role includes acquiring and maintaining current knowledge, mentoring hospital staff, leading a wound care shared governance committee, and conducting product reviews for wound and ostomy care.
