About The Position

Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School is South Carolina’s residential alternative education program serving students ages 16–19 through GED preparation, life-skills development, vocational training, and structured support services. The Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Teacher provides career-focused instruction, transition planning, employability training, and individualized vocational support services for students enrolled at Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. The teacher works collaboratively with academic staff, counselors, vocational instructors, special services personnel, and community partners to prepare students for successful employment, postsecondary education, and independent living. The position emphasizes workforce readiness, career exploration, rehabilitation support, life-skills development, and individualized transition services for at-risk youth and students with disabilities or employment barriers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in: Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education, Career & Technical Education, Counseling, Workforce Development, or related field.
  • Valid South Carolina teaching certification or eligibility for certification.
  • Experience working with at-risk youth, alternative education students, or students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of workforce development and transition planning.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification or endorsement in Vocational Rehabilitation, Career and Technical Education, Transition Services, or Special Education preferred.
  • Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or related field.
  • Experience in GED, alternative education, or residential school environments.
  • Familiarity with South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department services.
  • OSHA, WorkKeys, or workforce certification training experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom and hands-on vocational instruction aligned with workforce readiness standards.
  • Develop and implement individualized vocational rehabilitation and transition plans.
  • Teach employability skills including: Resume writing, Interview preparation, Workplace communication, Professional behavior, Time management, Financial literacy.
  • Integrate career readiness into academic and vocational programming.
  • Support students in identifying career interests, strengths, and goals.
  • Coordinate vocational rehabilitation services for students with disabilities or identified barriers to employment.
  • Assist students with career assessments, job readiness evaluations, and transition planning.
  • Collaborate with special education staff and counselors to support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and transition goals.
  • Facilitate referrals to community agencies, workforce programs, and postsecondary opportunities.
  • Develop partnerships with local employers, workforce agencies, technical colleges, and apprenticeship programs.
  • Coordinate job-shadowing, internships, career fairs, and work-based learning experiences.
  • Maintain communication with families, employers, and support agencies regarding student progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of student participation, assessments, certifications, and progress.
  • Prepare reports required by state, federal, and school guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with vocational rehabilitation, special education, and workforce development regulations.
  • Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings.
  • Support the school’s structured, military-style learning environment.
  • Assist with student supervision and campus activities as assigned.
