About The Position

Performs the role of a Surgical Technologist with specialty training for Neuro, CVOR, Ophthalmology, Difficult Airway, or Transplant, utilized daily in an inpatient setting. Staff will take specialty call for these teams based on their specialty experience. This role also supports teams who take specialty call separately (e.g., Ophthalmology call from Cross Creek) for their call hours only as a Job 2. Duties include coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs, preparing the surgical field/back table, assisting the surgeon during the procedure, and aiding other operating room staff. The position requires adherence to standards and guidelines from multiple industry agencies (including TJC, AAMI, AST, FDA, CDC). Must be able to take call, including weekends. This position is bonus eligible.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA; or will accept NCCT certification IF employed as a surgical tech in S.C. prior to January 1, 2008 or has completed a surgical tech military training program.
  • Maintains surgical technology certification
  • Ability to complete 15 hours of mandatory ST education annually required.
  • For CVOR: Ability to setup and scrub new technology procedures such as TAVR, LVAD, Impella, Ablation, Transmyocardio Laser, Assist Devices and Endovascular cases.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regards to cannulation of the patient.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating instrumentation and sterile field needs for the procedure.
  • Preparing the surgical field/back table.
  • Assisting surgeon at the field during procedure.
  • Assisting other operating room staff as needed.
  • Preparing the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up the back table, and arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case and surgeon's preference card.
  • Providing technical assistance with preparation of patient and any specialty equipment.
  • Assisting the surgical team during the operative procedure.
  • Assisting in maintaining correct surgical counts, identifies and cares for specimens, handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.
  • Maintaining sterile field during surgical procedures.
  • Adhering to accepted standards for provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment.
  • Complying with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions.
  • Cleaning and preparing rooms between procedures and terminally cleaning at the end of the day.
  • Returning unused supplies and instruments and extra equipment to proper storage.
  • Assisting with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned.
  • Training and assisting with integration of new team members.
  • Sharing knowledge, ideas, and expertise to support the team and the department.
  • Maintaining all responsibilities and performing all duties included in specialty team assignment, including separate call schedule and ongoing education as applicable.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
