The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for providing peri-operative care for a patient population that includes Infants, Pediatrics, Adults, and Geriatrics. This role involves displaying skills and behavior conducive to desirable outcomes during intra-operative procedures, assisting the RN circulator in formulating the plan of care preoperatively, and coordinating patient care peri-operatively. The CST assumes responsibility and accountability for their behavior to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. Post-operatively, they follow proper procedures for the care of instruments, supplies, and equipment, and assist the RN circulator with post-operative duties under supervision. The role also emphasizes infection prevention by minimizing the risk of infection transfer and accidental contamination, and ensuring patient safety by protecting them from injury. Continuous improvement in quality, service, and cost-effectiveness is a key aspect, as is demonstrating competence in age-appropriate patient care.
