About The Position

The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is a pediatric level-one, academic trauma center with eight OR suites on level 3 and two minor ORs on level 2. These cover all pediatric surgical specialties including: Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Dental, General Surgery, and Pediatric hearts. The nursing teams consist of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologists. RNs are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The SJCH OR is a busy and dynamic nurse-driven, Magnet-designated department that provides cutting-edge technology to the children of SC. This role functions autonomously as a member of the operating room team, following established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures, and performing appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care. The CST II is expected to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and behaviors consistent with competent practice, utilizing higher-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills, possessing advanced relevant surgical skills for the area of practice, and applying knowledge to emergency situations. Competent CST IIs use conscious, abstract reasoning and problem-solving in planning collaboration with peers to assess patient and surgeon needs during surgical procedures. They practice autonomously in assisting with other duties such as assisting providers and nurses with vaginal deliveries, supply restocking, instrument flow, and front desk customer service and engagement. Competent CST IIs are essential to the organization due to their efficiency, ability to set priorities, and confidence in managing most situations within their clinical specialty.
