About The Position

The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is a pediatric level-one, academic trauma center with eight OR suites on level 3 and two minor ORs on level 2. These ORs cover all pediatric surgical specialties including: Trauma, Transplant, Ortho, Neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Dental, General Surgery, and Pediatric hearts. The nursing teams consists of 75% Registered Nurses and 25% Certified Surgical Technologist. RN’s are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures. The SJCH OR is a busy and dynamic nurse driven, Magnet designated department that provides cutting-edge technology to the children of SC. This role is an employee position with MUSC, working 40 hours per week on a day shift (10:30a-9p), with rotating call and holidays. A sign-on bonus of up to $10,000 is available for external candidates with a 2-year commitment. The Certified Surgical Tech, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, follows established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. They perform appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care and function autonomously as a member of the operating room team. This role demonstrates knowledge and skills required to provide care and/or service appropriate to the developmental level of patients, with consideration of the needs of patients’ families.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology or surgical technology military program.
  • At least one year of work experience as a Certified Surgical Tech required.
  • Must hold and maintain the Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, (formerly LCC-ST).
  • A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card required.

  • Possesses advanced relevant surgical skills for area of practice and applies knowledge to emergency situations.
  • Uses conscious, abstract reasoning and problem solving in planning collaboration with peers to assess the needs of the patient and surgeon during the surgical procedure.
  • Practices autonomously in assisting with other duties such as assisting providers and nurses with vaginal deliveries, supply restocking, instrument flow, front desk customer service and engagement.
  • Demonstrates efficiency, ability to set priorities and confidence in managing most situations within their clinical specialty.
