About The Position

This role involves assisting in the Operating Room (OR) suite, obtaining necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures, and maintaining a sterile field. The technician will care for all patients entering the OR suite, acting in the role of a scrub nurse. Responsibilities include setting up sterile tables, performing counts with the circulator, assisting surgeons with gowns and gloves, draping sterile fields, passing instruments, preparing sterile dressings, assisting with patient transfers, returning soiled instruments for sterilization, and cleaning the room and prepping for the next patient. The position requires performing duties within the scope of governing organizations and MLHS policies, utilizing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation processes, and actively working to reduce errors. The technician should ask questions when needed, set and meet individual/professional goals, perform with minimal supervision, exercise good judgment, resolve risk/safety/quality issues, use work hours efficiently, and demonstrate willingness to assist co-workers and mentor new employees. Respect for privacy, dignity, and courteous, friendly interaction are expected, along with advocating for patients and families and anticipating patient needs.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Surgical Technologists
  • Prefer Certified Surgical Tech with previous experience working as a surgical tech.
  • (LPN's only) Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Minnesota.
  • Has operating room scrub tech experience from another facility.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, policies, procedures, and medical ethics equivalent to years of experience.
  • Excellent communication skills at various levels.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for all patients who enter the OR suite.
  • Acts in the role of a scrub nurse.
  • Maintains certifications in all areas within scope of practice (if applicable).
  • Orients new scrub personnel as needed.
  • Sets up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedure.
  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.

  • Passes instruments to surgeon during procedure appropriately.

  • Returns soiled instruments to decontamination room for terminal sterilization.
