The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) plays a crucial role in maintaining the sterile field within the operating room, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques to prevent contamination and infection. This role involves assisting the surgical team as the sterile member, passing instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgical procedures. The CST is responsible for preparing the operating room before an operation, organizing sterile tables with instruments, linens, and solutions, and operating equipment such as sterilizers and suction machines. They also maintain the supply of fluids needed during surgery, prepare patients for surgery by cleaning and positioning them, and apply sterile drapes. The CST scrubs in, dons sterile attire, and works within the sterile field to handle sterilized items. They anticipate the surgeon's needs, efficiently passing instruments and providing necessary sterile items. Additionally, the CST assists with specimen preparation and disposal, holds retractors, cuts sutures, applies dressings, and cleans and restocks the operating room. They must adhere to professional standards, attend in-service training, and provide age-appropriate care. Non-essential functions include serving internal and external customers, handling sensitive information, understanding healthcare regulations like HIPAA, and performing other assigned duties.
