The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) is responsible for scrubbing, setting up, and assisting in preparation for surgical cases. This includes assessing the need for required instruments, equipment, and supplies, as well as positioning devices and assisting with patient positioning. The CST ensures the operating room is prepared in a timely manner to prevent case delays and does not leave the room until properly relieved. They pull and check cases for needs and completeness, verify equipment functionality before each case, and maintain a sterile field using aseptic technique. The CST also dons appropriate attire, practices proper hand washing, corrects breaks in technique immediately, and cleans the room before the first case of the day. They assist with turning over OR rooms, including setting up equipment, and properly use and document sterilizer use. The CST dons gowns and gloves using proper technique, uses proper prepping technique, and utilizes count sheets appropriately. They perform counts correctly per policy and procedures and follow protocol for incorrect counts. The role requires manual dexterity in handling surgical instruments, passing instruments appropriately, assisting with draping, retracting, and assisting during the procedure. The CST properly applies dressings as instructed and ensures proper collection and labeling of all specimens. They perform proper hand-off of all specimens to the Registered Nurse.
