About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) plays a critical role in supporting ophthalmic surgical procedures by maintaining sterile technique, preparing the operating room, and assisting the surgical team throughout the intraoperative phase. Working in a high-volume ambulatory surgery center (ASC), the CST ensures surgical efficiency, patient safety, and adherence to infection control standards. This position requires collaboration with surgeons, Registered Nurses (RNs), anesthesia providers, and other clinical staff to promote optimal surgical outcomes. The CST is expected to demonstrate technical proficiency in ophthalmic instrumentation, sterile processing, and surgical procedures. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current BLS certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST) Certification from an accredited school
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a high-stress environment

Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms with appropriate surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies.
  • Ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment prior to procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning and sterile field setup.
  • Verify patient and surgical procedure information in coordination with the surgical team.
  • Assist surgeons by passing instruments and supplies during procedures.
  • Maintain a sterile environment and anticipate surgeon needs during surgery.
  • Monitor and manage the surgical field and instrumentation to prevent contamination.
  • Handle specimens appropriately and according to protocol.
  • Document intraoperative activities as required.
  • Assist with instrument and equipment breakdown and proper reprocessing.
  • Dispose of biohazard materials according to infection control protocols.
  • Restock operating room supplies and prepare for the next case.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to ensure smooth transitions between cases.
  • Maintain competency in aseptic technique and ophthalmic surgical procedures.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and equipment sterilization standards.
  • Participate in ongoing performance improvement and quality assurance activities.
  • Assist with inventory control and supply management for the operating room.
  • Provide orientation and support to new surgical technologists and clinical team members.
  • Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA regulations by safeguarding patient privacy and ensuring the confidentiality of all health information.
