About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technician will facilitate the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures. This role involves preparing the operating suite with necessary drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies specific to the surgery. The technician ensures all equipment is in good working order and sterile instruments are readily available. They assist with patient preparation, including transporting, positioning, and draping. During surgery, the technician passes instruments to the physician and continuously accounts for all instruments and supplies. They also receive and process specimens for the laboratory, set up and monitor the sterile field, and assist with room cleaning to ensure quick turnover times. Post-surgery, they return sterile supplies to storage and restock rooms, and transport patients to the PACU or their room. Proper hand-washing techniques are essential to prepare for surgery.

Requirements

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Surgical technologists graduate from surgical technology program (Years of relevant experience may be substituted for required education/certification.)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
  • Active license from the Board of Medicine or Health Professions in Virginia, or be qualified to be grandfathered into the regulations by the Board of Medicine.

Nice To Haves

  • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) strongly preferred.
  • Previous operating room experience or central sterile processing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares surgical operating suite with drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies consistent with the type of surgery being performed.
  • Ensures good working order of equipment and availability of sterile instruments.
  • Assists with preparing, transporting, positioning, and draping patients.
  • Passes instruments to the physician during surgery.
  • Continually accounts for the number and location of instruments and supplies during surgery.
  • Receives and processes specimens for delivery to the laboratory.
  • Sets up and monitors the sterile field.
  • Assists the team with cleaning of rooms to maintain 20-minute or less turnover times.
  • Returns sterile supplies to proper storage areas and restocks rooms.
  • Transports patients to and from the operating room to the PACU or patient room.
  • Uses proper hand-washing techniques to remove bacteria from skin and prepare for surgery
