Requirements

  • Graduate of a surgical technology program
  • Graduate of an Accredited Surgical First Assisting program
  • Surgical Technician certification is required
  • First Assist certification required
  • 3 – 5 years of operating room experience
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • The Certified Surgical Tech First Assistant (CSTFA) is a specialized Tech whose practice is an extension of perioperative nursing and has acquired knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to provide the surgical team with assistance within the Operating Room and other similar settings.
  • The development of specific technical skills enables the CSTFA to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for Certified Surgical Techs without CSTFA education and training.
  • The scope of practice includes intraoperative surgical first assisting.
  • Intraoperatively, the CSTFA functions interdependently with the surgeon and applies knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient.
  • The CSTFA will provide patient care for all ages and/or provide leadership and direction to the perioperative team during the Perioperative phase as needed.
  • The CSTFA does not concurrently function as the Scrub Tech.
