About The Position

This position assists with nursing care and surgical services under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and physician/surgeon. The role involves utilizing aseptic techniques, assisting the circulating RN in monitoring and maintaining a sterile field, performing sponge, instrument, and needle counts, assisting surgeons with gowning, gloving, and positioning, passing sterile instruments, operating specialty equipment, and preparing supplies and equipment for surgical procedures. The Certified Surgical Tech also assists with sterilization and maintenance of supplies and equipment, monitors inventory, orders and restocks supplies, assists with general cleaning duties, clerical work, record keeping, and patient charge recording.

Requirements

  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification through one of the following boards: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) National Center for Competencies Testing (NCCT) American Allied Health Association (AAHA)
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to follow strict sterile technique.
  • Ability to set up operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass to and from surgeon during procedures.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of prior scrub experience.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
  • Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
  • Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
  • Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
  • Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
  • Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
  • Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.
  • Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards. Performs equipment checks as assigned.
  • Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
  • Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.
  • Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.
  • Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.
  • Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.
