About The Position

This role's primary responsibility is to function as a scrub technologist in an operating room, assisting with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. The position requires maintaining positive customer relations and demonstrating competency and technical skills appropriate for assigned cases. The Surgical Tech will perform various duties within their scope of responsibility and report to the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certification as a surgical technologist (CST)
  • 6 months-2 years of active experience

Responsibilities

  • Engages in population appropriate communication, understanding growth and development milestones, and identifying physical limitations of patients.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems, unique psychological needs, or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
  • Operates equipment safely and recognizes/responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Responsible for surgical preparation: checks daily assignment, reviews preference sheets, obtains needed supplies, checks table readiness, and ensures all necessary items are present.
  • Responsible for the set-up of sterile instrumentation, supplies, and equipment, demonstrating and maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling special supplies and equipment, ensuring proper functioning.
  • Effectively communicates pertinent information to relief personnel for safe continuity of care.
  • Promotes an environment of cooperation and teamwork through prompt attendance, courteous communication, sharing information, flexibility, and appropriate break times.
  • Assists with patient care at the end of the surgical procedure, including preparing and cleansing the operative site, connecting drainage tubes, applying sterile dressings, and assisting with patient transfer.
  • Processes case carts, disassembles table contents, and prepares instruments for cleaning.
  • Disposes of trash and linen appropriately and assists in expediting case turnaround time.
  • Promotes a safe environment by ensuring proper counting of instruments, sharps, and sponges, identifying and transferring surgical specimens, and performing safety checks on equipment.
  • Prepares and labels medications correctly, including dosages and percentages.
  • Keeps the operative field free of unnecessary items and wipes instruments clean.
  • Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior by learning from experiences, serving as a role model, recognizing peer accomplishments, and participating in committee work.
  • Identifies and utilizes feedback for learning needs, meets emergency needs through on-call participation, and exercises safe judgment.
  • Functions as a Patient Advocate by being aware of physical and emotional needs, assisting any patient in need, protecting patient dignity and privacy, and putting patient welfare above personal considerations.
  • Participates in educational activities of the unit, including assisting in the orientation of new personnel and attending in-services.
