About The Position

This position involves performing patient care activities in a perioperative setting, assisting surgeons with surgical procedures, and maintaining the surgical suite. The Certified Surgical Technologist will ensure the sterile field is maintained, prepare and stock supplies, and handle instruments and equipment according to established protocols. Responsibilities include patient positioning, specimen identification, dressing application, and assisting with room turnover. The role also requires knowledge of surgical solutions and medications, effective use of supplies, and functioning as a team member during stressful situations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Formal training as an O.R. Technician
  • Certified as a surgical technologist

  • Must obtain ACLS certification within 3 months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient care activities, including assisting with patient positioning to meet patient and surgeon needs, protecting nerve and bony prominences, maintaining body alignment for vascular flow and respiratory ventilation, and ensuring patient privacy.
  • Ensure the physical preparation of the surgical suite, including cleaning, stocking, and replacing supplies.
  • Open sterile supplies onto the sterile field using aseptic techniques and ensure the integrity of the sterile field, initiating corrective measures as appropriate.
  • Comply with Surgery Center protocol and manufacturers' guidelines for the use, processing, and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Check equipment for safe working order and effective cleaning prior to use, remove defective instruments and equipment from service, and document specific problems.
  • Set up sterile tables with instruments, sutures, blades, electrosurgical equipment, suction, prosthesis, and solutions needed for each procedure according to Center standards.
  • Scrub, gown, and glove according to established Center policy.
  • Identify all specimens and follow special instructions of the surgeon.
  • Prepare surgical incisions and apply post-op dressings per surgeon preference.
  • Assist with the transport of patients.
  • Assist in keeping surgeon's preference cards current by reporting needed changes to the circulating nurse and check cards at case end to assure updating is complete.
  • Prepare instruments for return to the processing department for decontamination and sterilization.
  • Participate as an operating room team member to complete room turnover.
  • Apply basic knowledge of all solutions and medications for use during surgical procedures in accordance with O.R. Standards.
  • Maintain supply of sponges, fluids, sutures, and other supplies for use during procedures.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon, hold retractors, cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed by the surgeon during the operation.
  • Use dexterity and economy of motion in passing surgical instruments.
  • Function as a team member during stress and in crisis situations.
  • Utilize cost containment principles for the use of supplies.
