About The Position

This full-time, day shift position in Endoscopy involves assisting the surgical team by preparing operating rooms, supporting procedures under the supervision of the circulating nurse, and ensuring patient safety. The role requires verifying surgical sites, assisting with patient transport, preparing the pre-operative site, and managing OR schedules and supplies. Responsibilities include performing surgical scrubs, maintaining the sterile field, organizing instruments, passing instruments to surgeons, and performing counts. The position also involves handling medications and specimens, assisting with prepping and draping, participating in time-outs, preparing sterile dressings, and ensuring equipment functionality. Post-procedure duties include room turnover, cleaning, waste disposal, specimen processing, and instrument assembly. Communication with surgeons regarding preferences and maintaining specialty preference cards are also key aspects. The role requires providing age-appropriate, patient-centered care in accordance with MercyOne standards and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology; completion of surgical tech apprenticeship or military program; graduate of an LPN program with Surgical experience; or equivalent experience to demonstrate competency.
  • LPN license required if graduate of LPN program.
  • No prior experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • CST certification preferred but not required in Iowa.
  • Previous endo/GI experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team in Endoscopy by preparing operating rooms and supporting procedures under the supervision of the circulating nurse
  • Verify correct surgical site, assist with patient transport as needed, and prepare the pre‑operative site
  • Review OR schedules, note changes to procedures, and gather required equipment, instruments, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards
  • Perform surgical scrub, don sterile gown and gloves, and participate in opening and maintaining the sterile field
  • Organize instruments, supplies, and equipment to ensure efficient workflow and patient safety
  • Instrument surgical cases, pass instruments to surgeons, and anticipate needs to support uninterrupted procedures
  • Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts in accordance with policy
  • Maintain integrity of the sterile field and properly receive, label, and handle medications and specimens
  • Assist with prepping and draping patients and gowning and gloving surgical team members
  • Participate in time-outs and support patient safety throughout the intraoperative phase
  • Prepare sterile dressings and ensure all equipment is functioning properly, reporting any malfunctions
  • Support post‑procedure activities, including room turnover, cleaning and disinfection, disposal of contaminated waste and sharps, specimen processing, and assembly of instruments for Central Supply
  • Communicate changes in surgeon preferences for supplies or equipment and assist with maintaining specialty preference cards
  • Provide age-appropriate, patient-centered care in accordance with MercyOne standards, policies, and all applicable regulatory requirements
