About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assistant works in the Operating Room at Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown in Nashville, Tennessee, providing high-level intraoperative assistance as an extension of the surgeon. The role includes tissue manipulation, retraction, and advanced suctioning during complex procedures. The assistant prepares operating room suites to meet surgeon preferences, supports sterile turnarounds, and manages patient positioning and stabilizing equipment to provide surgical exposure while preserving patient safety, dignity, and comfort. The schedule is full-time days and includes two 8-hour shifts and two 12-hour shifts.

Requirements

• BLS Provider certification obtained within 30 days of hire or job transfer; American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification is accepted.
• Certified First Surgical Assistant certification obtained before hire or job transfer, except for employees hired or transferred before May 30, 2021. Accepted certifications are from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, the American Board of Surgical Assistants, or the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants.
• High school diploma equivalency with two years of cumulative experience, or an associate's/technical degree, or four years of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon during complex procedures with tissue manipulation, retraction, and advanced suctioning.
• Prepare and customize the operating room to meet surgeon preferences.
• Manage streamlined, sterile operating room turnarounds.
• Position patients and manage stabilizing equipment to provide optimal surgical exposure while prioritizing patient safety, dignity, and comfort.
