About The Position

This role involves providing direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures. The Certified Surgical First Assistant will be responsible for positioning patients to ensure optimal exposure for the surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary while prioritizing patient comfort and safety. They will also be responsible for visualizing the operative site, manipulating tissue and materials, retracting, sponging, suctioning, and irrigating. Achieving temporary and permanent hemostasis using appropriate techniques, assisting with body plane closure, applying wound dressings, and securing drainage systems are key duties. The role also includes assisting with room cleanup, removing soiled case carts, supplies, and trash from the OR room, and participating as a surgical team member in preparing the surgical suite with the appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies according to the surgeon's preference cards.

Requirements

  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
  • Certified Assistant Surgical Assistant specializing in Surgery credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required.
  • High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures.
  • Position patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
  • Utilize appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
  • Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
  • Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.
  • Participate as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.
