About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is a hands-on working role, assisting the Surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures. This role includes daily management of staff and direct reports.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in surgical technology from an approved, accredited surgical technology program.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) licensure or certification as a surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or similar professional.
  • Licensed as a Surgical Assistant through the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, OR Certified by the American Board of Surgical Assistants or the National Surgical Assistant Association, OR Licensed healthcare professional specifically trained by responsible surgeon under whose supervision this assistant will practice.
  • CPR certification.
  • Several years of experience in operating room assisting (often must be completed within the last 3-5 years).
  • Completion of practicum with a minimum of 300 cases.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the safe positioning of the patient according to the surgeon’s preference, patient’s anatomical and physiological limits and surgical procedure(s) to be performed.
  • A preoperative introduction visit may be done to assess the surgical site to better aid in positioning.
  • Assists circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient to include but not limited to: foley catheter placement, tourniquet application placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid presser application and other procedures, as needed.
  • Performs specific tasks according to surgeon’s preference, utilizing appropriate techniques including, but not limited to incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostat is by means of injection, manual and topical methods and application of appropriate energy sources, manipulation and dissection/removal of tissues.
  • Aides in implanting, securing and/or removal of devices and drains, applying appropriate dressing material specific to procedure.
  • Applies any other specific dressing material such as splints or casts, assesses skin integrity.
  • Assists in transfer of the patient and follows the patient to recover, if needed or directed by the surgeon.
  • Surgical Assistants having appropriate training also performs under surgeon supervision, including but not limited to vein and graft harvesting and graft and implant preparation.
  • Performs additional duties as delegated by the surgeon in cooperation with state and hospital policies.
  • Assist with the managing and scheduling of other Allied Health Professionals based on the needs of the hospital.
  • Develop and market the Allied Health Professional –First Assist program for Legent Orthopedic and Spine.
  • All other duties as assigned.
