About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assist (CSA) anticipates the needs of the surgical team. The CSA assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment and set up of various tables and positioning equipment. The CSA provides retraction for visualization of the surgical field, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incisions, instillation of medications, applications of surgical dressings, splints and casts. Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. The Certified Surgical First Assist Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area. Performs surgical assistant responsibilities in accordance with the scope of practice set by the CAAHEP. Exercise critical thinking skills in all aspects of the surgical assistant role. Establishes and maintains the sterile field and assures team members do also. Basic knowledge of instrumentation. Demonstrates correct and safe instrument passing. Participates in surgical counts per policy. Performs/ Administers “local” anesthetics. Administers/ Maintains Foleys/ Drains. Applies dressing/ casting materials. Makes changes to DPCs with assistance from CTL. Provides technical first assistance to the surgeon in the OR and throughout the perioperative period. Applies deep ligatures, clips and occluders. Accesses radiographic images in the EMR. Consistently delivers the best in customer service and patient care. Utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care. Will function under the direct supervision of the surgeon who is being assisted.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accredited Surgical Assistant Program
  • Experience gained through hands-on experience and are grandfathered in the State of Va
  • Candidate has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology during the person's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States
  • Certified Surgical Assistant obtained or maintain licensure with the VA Board of Medicine
