About The Position

The Certified Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon in performing approved surgical procedures and works under the operating surgeon’s direct supervision and at the surgeon’s request.

The role is based in Royal Oak Hospital’s South Tower surgical unit, which has 16 operating rooms and multidisciplinary teams. The unit performs elective and acute or urgent trauma procedures for pediatric and adult patients and is recognized for Orthopedics and Neurosurgery. Its capabilities include Surgical Theatre, robotic-assisted, endoscopic, and minimally invasive surgery. Royal Oak Hospital is a major academic and referral center with Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma designations.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Completion of a Surgical Tech First Assistant or Certified Surgical Assistant program.
• Upon hire, certification as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the NCCSA, Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the NBSTSA, or Certified Surgical Assistant (SA-C) through the ABSA.
• AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.

Nice To Haves

• Associate’s degree or equivalent; relevant experience in lieu of an associate’s degree may be considered.
• Two years of relevant experience; surgical assisting experience preferred.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through AST or NBSTSA.
• AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
