The San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration are the core divisions of SFDPH. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services. The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future and current vacancies in this class at other locations within the DPH for the duration of the eligible list.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License
- Valid Certification as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
- Applicants possessing a valid CRNA certificate from another U.S. state may apply. However, if selected, they cannot be appointed until they obtain both a California Registered Nurse license and a California Nurse Anesthetist Certification issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Applicants who have completed or are enrolled in the final quarter/semester of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA)-approved program may apply. However, if selected, they cannot be appointed until they obtain both a California Registered Nurse license and California Nurse Anesthetist Certification issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Out-of-state applicants in their final quarter/semester of their COA program are advised to immediately pursue their California RN license.
- Knowledge of surgical nursing principles and procedures, including various types and methods of administering anesthesia; standard operating room methods, equipment and procedures; anesthesia equipment, instruments and drugs used in various types of surgery.
- Ability and Skill to detect unfavorable patient reactions and apply prompt remedial measures.
Responsibilities
- Administers various types of anesthesia to render patients insensitive to pain during operations, deliveries and other therapeutic and diagnostic measures.
- Observes anesthetized patients for adverse reactions and takes remedial action.
- Maintains records of anesthesia administered and condition of patient prior to and throughout anesthesia.
- Carries out established methods and procedures in administering anesthetics.
- Achieves moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through efficient handling of equipment, materials and supplies.
- Makes responsible contacts with physicians, surgeons and nursing staff on specialized matters.
- Prepares detailed medical and technical records relative to anesthetics administered and patients reactions.
- Administers various types of anesthetics by inhalation, intravenous injection, epidural, spinal and block methods.
- Checks anesthesia machines to assure proper working order; checks resuscitation equipment.
- Assembles and maintains sterility of appropriate anesthesia equipment and administers medication to patients under anesthesia.
- Checks patient upon arrival in surgery; evaluates pre-operative condition; makes entries in anesthesia record log; administers various drugs and administers oxygen as necessary for each particular operation; gives blood transfusion when clinically appropriate; monitors patient per American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) standards; discontinues anesthesia at conclusion of operation.
- Accompanies patient to recovery room and reports condition to receiving nurse.
- Maintains an accurate anesthesia narcotic record.
