About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Lab Management Team, performs phlebotomy, heel and finger sticks; operates and maintains point of care lab equipment (CLIA Waived); conducts problem resolution, supply inventories and record keeping; renders excellent and effective communication to laboratory internal and external customers. Demonstrates skills and abilities by following the guidelines in venipuncture, heel and finger stick. Has knowledge and skills in basic collection and specimen preparation, storage and disposal of specimen, revision of daily temperature and recording; according to Lab Procedure Manuals. Performs point of care testing, quality control, reporting and records keeping of CLIA waived complexity testing according to Lab Procedure Manuals. Demonstrates basic computer literacy to meet department needs and duties (i.e. records keeping, health record entries, results tracking, etc.). Performs patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care providers following established clinical protocols and policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities. Ability to multi task, flexible, ensures accuracy and completeness of work, adaptable to changes in department and business needs. Accountable and requires minimal direction and supervision and maintain good working relationship with employees, coworkers and departments. Maintains workstation, furnishings and equipment clean, and supply inventory at prescribed stock levels. Assist in checking daily temperature and recording. Possesses personal characteristics of professionalism, credible commitment to high standards with excellent communication skills; effectively and clearly communicate verbally and in writing with patients and other customers. Adheres to the established departmental policies and objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. May be requested to assist in communication efforts that require verbal translation for patients; depending on the assignment. May be required to travel to other SYHealth sites as needed. Maintains current continuing education and professional licensure. Attends and participates in meetings and additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Proficient in medical terminology
  • Basic computer literacy
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Certification – Current California State Phlebotomy Licensure
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
  • Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs
  • Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Three months medical laboratory experience as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
  • 30-40 blood draws
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
