About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician II primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves various duties including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical tasks. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for all age groups. Responsibilities extend to processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), preparing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking and ordering supplies, and maintaining the cleanliness of work areas and equipment. Additionally, the role may involve processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation, assisting with sample pick-up, sorting samples, supporting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. The position may also require working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts, and performing point-of-care testing after appropriate training and competency validation. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience, required.
  • BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for blood specimen collection.
  • Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and use of equipment for newborns to geriatric patients.
  • Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
  • Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stock and order routine supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
  • Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation.
  • Assist with sample pick-up at hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, and putting away samples.
  • Assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries.
  • May work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift.
  • May perform point of care testing after training and documented competency.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director.
