About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role operates under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. The technician is responsible for various tasks including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. They must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette. The role requires proficiency in proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for collecting specimens from all age groups, from newborns to geriatric patients. Processing of various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank) is a key responsibility, as is processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories. The technician will also manage routine supply stocking and ordering, maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas. They will process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures. Additional duties may include picking up samples at the hospital/OR, assisting lab specialties in sorting and putting away samples, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pick-up/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and handling product deliveries. The position may involve working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts. A Certified Phlebotomy Technician may also be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead, and other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Requirements

High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
Possess adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
Demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock and order routine supplies.
Maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
Assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.
May work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift.
May be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead.
