About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician III primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for all age groups. Responsibilities include processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank), processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking and ordering routine supplies, and maintaining the cleanliness of work areas and equipment. Additional duties may include assisting with sample pick-up, sorting samples, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. The role may involve working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts, resolving staffing issues, and performing other tasks assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience, required.
  • BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

  • Current and valid state certification as a CPT preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
  • Possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates good communication skills and telephone etiquette in greeting patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
  • Processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
  • Processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stocks and orders routine supplies.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
  • Processes or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • May assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.
  • May work multi-departments or night shift/graveyard shift.
  • Resolving staffing issues.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
